The Red Twig Dogwood is a large deciduous shrub that is commonly found along the Tualatin River. It can be identified by its vibrant red stems that show in the winter. It blooms in the mid spring to summer with frothy white clusters of tiny flowers. These flowers transform into white berry-like fruit that are a favorite of birds. Native people used the flexible branches in baskets and made a red dye from the bark – present tense for Indigenous uses.
