The Northern Red-Legged Frog is the largest native frog species in the western United States growing up to 5 inches long. They live in aquatic habitats such as shallow-water ponds and wetlands. They are identifiable by the bright red color of the underside of their hind legs. The older the frog, the redder it is. They have been identified by the Oregon Conservation Strategy as a species of concern due to their declining numbers. Their decline is due to habitat loss, climate change, and the arrival of invasive bullfrogs which prey on them.
