Interstate 205 (I-205) is the I-5 bypass route on the east side of Portland, Oregon. The freeway is 37 miles long and connects to I-5 in Tualatin, Oregon and Salmon Creek, Washington. The freeway was conceived in 1943, construction started in 1967, and completed in 1983.
An equivalent Westside Bypass on the west side of Portland, Oregon was proposed in the late 1980s. The Westside Bypass was proposed to run between I-5 in Tualatin, Oregon and the Sunset Highway (US 26) in Hillsboro. However, strong opposition from a wide range of communities and organizations caused the project to be cancelled in 1997. This opposition included a group of citizens who were concerned about the large impact the freeway cooridor would have on the Tualatin River watershed. This group ultimately formed the Tualatin Riverkeepers in 1992.
