The Riverbank Lupine is found throughout western North America. It can be identified by its tall, erect stems with leaves having 5-9 leaflets and a vibrant bluish-purple flower. The flowers mature into a hairy, gray, mottled seed pod later in the summer. Because Riverbank Lupine has the ability to fix nitrogen it can thrive in soils where other plants struggle such as sand dunes or roadside slopes.
