Western Pondhawk Dragonflies are one of the more than 90 species of dragonflies and damselflies found in Oregon. Many of these can be found along the Tualatin River. Western Pondhawks are voracious predators that eat a wide variety of insects including mosquitoes. Male Western Pondhawks patrol their territories by hovering and flying quickly over open water. Females are more common in dense grassy areas away from breeding sites. Western Pondhawks do not migrate south for the winter. However, many species of dragonflies do migrate.
